In his senior year at Salisbury University, Andrew was doing a paid internship at a surf shop in Ocean City, MD, designing surf camp posters, graphics for apparel, and packaging for the company’s own line of bodyboards. “The guys at the shop didn’t want to run with one of the designs I did, one that I thought would really hit. I just though ‘I can do this myself’ and ordered a 4-color 1-station screen printing press and a flash dryer.” Andrew started a selling surf-inspired apparel as Circle In a Square Clothing to his friends and making lots of Christmas presents.
After graduation in 2006, Andrew started waiting tables for Sodel Concepts, 3-unit restaurant group. That fall, the owner Matt Haley, asked Andrew to design the logo for the new restaurant SoDel Concepts was building in Fenwick Island, DE. Since that interaction, Andrew has done graphic design for the company, officially being named Art Director in 2014. The parent company is now comprised of 16 restaurants, two breweries, and a consulting & management company.
“Matching the visuals, to the heart of each entity has always been my goal. Marketing strategies change, and with that comes a different plan of attack, whether it’s instagram posts, billboards, rack cards, or posters in the restaurants. I’ve been very fortunate that SoDel places such a heavy emphasis on the branding of each concept. Getting to work within budgets and deadlines for new projects, as well as rebrands has given me a new perspective on the push and pull of form and function.”
